New FortisBC Gas Line Replacement Set for Burnaby — Info Session Dates Announced

FortisBC needs to replace a 20-inch gas line to ensure 35,000 homes and businesses in New Westminster, Burnaby and Coquitlam can continue to receive natural gas.  This new line will connect the gas line system in Burnaby to the gas line system in New Westminster.  Two info sessions are now planned for July 8 and July 14 to provide more information.

Before building a new gas line, Fortis is assessing a number of factors including how to best minimize potential community and environmental impacts, as well as safety, cost and schedule. The project is still in the early planning stages, and there is opportunity now to engage with Fortis on the construction route.

The Burnaby Board of Trade supports private infrastructure investments such as this gas line replacement as both important economic activities in and of themselves, but also as fundamental pieces underpinning our future prosperity and opportunity as they maintain and expand critical growth-enabling infrastructure.   We will be engaging with FortisBC on the construction plans to minimize any impacts on business and on transportation as much as possible.    To provide your thoughts to the Burnaby Board of Trade on this issue, or any business matter, contact our policy director Cory Redekop at cory@bbot.ca

This project is expected to include:

  • five kilometres of new gas line in Burnaby, running along Gaglardi Way, Cariboo Road and 16th Avenue; route begins at the intersection of Broadway and Gaglardi Way and ends at the intersection of 1st Street and 16th Avenue
  • a new underground pressure regulating station at the intersection of Newcombe Street and 17th Avenue
  • decommissioning of the existing gas line on and around the Pattullo Bridge

In July, join Fortis for one of their virtual information sessions to learn more about the project, provide feedback and ask questions.
