Shadbolt Centre for the Arts

No Foreigners is a multi-media performance that meditates on North American Chinese shopping malls as spaces of cultural creation and clash. Multiple storylines begin in a mall and quickly diverge—catapulting us across cities, between Cantonese and English, in and out of the afterlife, through past, present and future. Weaving together text, miniatures, digital backdrops and live cameras, No Foreigners examines our changing relationships to these social spaces and the histories, characters, experiences and ephemera that keep inviting us back.

Curator’s Talk
December 1, 2019 | 2 PM
Burnaby Art Gallery
6344 Deer Lake Avenue
Burnaby, BC
Join us for the opening reception for Echoes at the Burnaby Art Gallery.
As an echo reflects and repeats between entities, this exhibition considers communication between bodies which may be thought to be eclipsed. Here, the bodies of water and the physical remnants of stone, plastic, and land become the houses for the historical traces of change and continuity. Selected artworks contemplate the physical and embodied ways in which memory reappears and continues to resonate within the individual and across generations.
Through practices such as ceremony and re-visitations of the voyages of one’s ancestors, the artists included in this exhibition call upon knowledge systems that do not rely on the written word, but rather assert a continuity and interconnectedness between body, land, and water. Through video works, digital prints, and sculpture, the artists demand we question our own contributions to a shared futurity.
