Burnaby Board of Trade Statement on the Resumption of B.C. Ports Strike

BURNABY, B.C., July 19, 2023

In response to the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) decision to reject the tentative agreement with the BC Maritime Employers Association and resume labour action at west coast ports, Paul Holden, President and CEO of the Burnaby Board of Trade, released the following statement:

“The recent turn of events has been incredibly disheartening after the ILWU has rejected the tentative agreement. This strike is costing a fortune and has led to the stalling of billions of dollars’ worth of goods—items that are pivotal to the smooth functioning of various industries—not going to market, and ultimately, impacting the overall health of our economy. The cost, both financial and operational, continues to escalate with each passing day of this unresolved dispute.

We need all parties to come together, including the federal government, to engage in constructive dialogue to swiftly end this strike and return to normalcy.”
