BBOT applauds federal government’s decision to approve Roberts Bank Terminal 2 Project

April 21, 2023

The Burnaby Board of Trade welcomes the federal government’s decision to approve the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 (RBT2) Project following a comprehensive environmental review that started back in 2013.

The Burnaby Board of Trade has been a consistent champion for building trade-enabling infrastructure that will create sustainable economic growth in support of both businesses and citizens alike. It’s important for government to be forward-looking and not just build our infrastructure for today’s needs, but for tomorrow’s possibilities. RBT2 will be a crucial link for Canada’s supply chains by providing Canada’s Pacific Gateway with an additional 30% of container terminal capacity, which in turn will enable our businesses to remain competitive while ensuring more reliable access to goods that businesses and workers use every day.

The Burnaby Board of Trade is equally committed to maintaining a high environmental standard. Given the exhaustive review that has taken place to reach this decision, along with the numerous legally binding conditions to protect the environment, local wildlife and land-use activities of Indigenous Peoples, the Burnaby Board of Trade applauds the balance in this decision to ensure the environmental risks are mitigated while allowing for the opportunities to grow our economy through trade.

The Burnaby Board of Trade looks forward to working with the federal government, the port authority and all stakeholders as the project progresses through permitting, construction, and eventually into operation.
