BBOT member Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre Celebrates 20th Anniversary

Burnaby’s Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its official opening on September 22, 2000.

Since then, the Centre has welcomed hundreds of thousands of people to visit and participate in its many exhibits, cultural programs, special events, and educational tours designed to promote a better understanding and appreciation by all Canadians of Japanese Canadian culture and heritage; and an awareness by all Canadians of the contribution of Japanese Canadians to Canadian society.

The 20th anniversary coincides with the opening of a new exhibit: Broken Promises.  Grounded in research, this exhibit explores the dispossession of Japanese Canadians in the 1940s. Learn about life for Japanese Canadians in Canada before war, the administration of their lives during and after war ends, and how legacies of dispossession continue to this day.
