Several Highways Closed Due to Flooding, Landslides; BBOT Calls for Urgent Plan for Repair, Hardening Against Climate

Several key highways are currently closed due to flooding and damage from landslides, severing vital supply chain and trade routes in and out of the Lower Mainland. This includes Highway 1 and the Coquihalla Highway, both of which appear to have sustained catastrophic damage which could take significant time to repair.

With businesses already facing extreme supply chain challenges, the Burnaby Board of Trade is urging the provincial government and the Ministry of Transportation to prioritize damage assessments and the re-establishment of a direct highway link between the Lower Mainland and the rest of the province as quickly as is safely possible.

This weekend’s storm also serves to highlight the urgent need to develop plans to harden our key infrastructure against extreme weather events and climate change. The Burnaby Board of Trade was the only chamber of commerce to engage with the province’s Climate Preparedness and Adaptation Strategy, and our submission focused on advancing climate-ready infrastructure.  Read more >
